An abandoned surfboard and personal belongings found discarded on a beach in Sydney’s north has caused a frenzied search for a missing person.
A surfboard and several personal belongings were discovered by a concerned local on the sand at Manly Beach at around 9pm on Sunday evening.
NSW Police, NSW Ambulance, Surf Life Saving NSW, the Toll Ambulance Rescue Helicopter and Polair all joined forces to look for any sign the items belonged to someone who had run into trouble on the beach. CCTV footage then revealed the items had been left behind by a large group of people who had been on the beach that evening. The surfboard and other personal effects were taken to Manly Police Station and stored in the lost property section where they wait to be claimed.
Emergency services quickly began an extensive search of the beach and neighbouring headlands until they discovered his body at 9:25 the next morning.Surf Life Saving NSW’s operations manager for public safety Brent Manieri told the Daily Telegraph that the state had one of the worst summers on record for drowning deaths.
