A British shopper's discovery of a Freddo chocolate bar priced at £1 has sparked outrage and debate on Reddit about the rising cost of living. The incident highlights the ongoing inflation issues in the UK, with many users expressing their astonishment and frustration at the price increase.
Cadbury 's popular chocolate bar Freddo has become a recognizable indicator of inflation in the UK since its return to shelves in 1994. Originally launched in 1974 but discontinued five years later, the small milk chocolate bar was reintroduced at a price of just 10 pence. However, since then, the price has seen a significant increase. Supermarket s now typically charge around 30 pence per bar.
This might seem steep, but it pales in comparison to the price one surprised British shopper discovered this week. So astonished, they took to Reddit to share a picture of their find, accompanied by an expletive-laden caption. \WARNING: The Reddit post contains explicit language and viewer discretion is advised. \The post quickly garnered hundreds of responses from other Reddit users who were equally shocked to see the 18g bar on sale for a staggering £1. 'I showed my wife this picture, asked whether it was time to start burning things down,' one person wrote. 'She asked me if it was real, I told her it was. She then asked whether this picture was taken in that London. I didn't know the answer but I assume it was.' Another user suggested the blame likely rested with the individual retailer rather than Cadbury. 'I blame the retailer in this case,' they stated. 'They are still available price marked from major wholesalers at 30p. I know these are not price marked but they aren't going to naturally be priced that differently. The retailer is robbing you blind though.' \A third user agreed, adding, 'That's pure greed by the store owner. You can get a price mark alternative for 30p. Never ever buy Non Price Mark and if you do, don't ever pay for chocolate that's above £1 for a standard bar or £1.50 for a block bar. Most profit margins are set to be about 28-35%. Absolute robbery Signed a confectionery sales specialist.' A fourth Redditor reminisced about a time when a Freddo, alongside other sweets and snacks, could be purchased for less than a pound. 'I remember when I was a kid you could get a Freddo, Space Raiders crisps, Frosties sweets, a Panda Pop, a Dick Turtle lucky bag, and 10p of penny sweets all for under a pound and still have 20p change. If you was to buy all that today it would cost £10 plus and more depending where you get them from.' However, a fifth user shifted the blame towards the brand itself, claiming, 'American private equity bought Cadbury. It’s not British. Stop buying it. If you look at anything that’s overpriced, it’s almost certainly because private equity or asset managers bought it. We need to stop these leeches stripping society.' \The 10p price of Freddo remained constant until 2005, when it increased to 12p. By 2015, the price had risen to 25p, with a further 2p increase two years later. Mondelez International, the owner of Cadbury, has been contacted for comment
