AFL: David Zita wraps up a frantic night of trade action in the AFL, including Bailey Smith locking in his future with Geelong and Liam Baker signing on with West Coast.

“I think Nicksy does like the variety but obviously those three guys, I think Alex will be ahead of the ball which won’t be too dissimilar to what he was playing at Melbourne, obviously James through the midfield with that quick feet and then Isaac’s got that flexibility through half back and wing so I think the variety and flexibility gives the coaching group some options during the game.

“Obviously we needed to free up some list spots that allows you to carry more picks into the draft, so we were happy to facilitate that.“We won’t be doing anything prior to the National Draft, it’s important for us to keep as many list spots vacant going in because that will allow us to carry more picks into the draft and then after the draft we’ll look at addressing that.”“Matthew Kennedy had a conversation at the end of the year where he wanted to play more midfield time.

“There were times . I think the value of pick 13 was really evident and Gold Coast had a lot of temptation to move that and that would have put the deal in jeopardy, no doubt about that. I think the fact that Port wanted one of their players and Gold Coast wanted one of theirs as well, the whole player swap made the whole thing stick together a little bit like glue. Otherwise, there would have been moments where that deal would’ve fallen through.

“It was very late in the afternoon when we started discussions again, we worked through those because we had some conversations earlier in the week, so we were able to pick those up pretty quickly. “We’ve done a fair bit of work on opportunities around West Australians coming home. We’ve had Clark come in the door and obviously Jackson and Sharp in recent years. Ultimately, we were looking from a midfield/high forward perspective and identified Shai and had discussions across the year about the opportunity to come home.

“We don’t want to do it . We don’t have intention to sit down and walk players through to the pre-season or national draft. You try and do a trade, but circumstances sometimes mean that it is an option, so you’ve always got it there but it’s not saying that throughout this trade period we thought about, we were always confident we would get a trade done.

“The time is now, we’ve absolutely got to have a go now, which is why we brought in mature players this year. It’s really important for us to do it. Last year we brought in four young players in the first round… we’ve been one of the least experienced teams for a long time now and it’s important for us to keep going forward.

“I’m a little more libertarian on that . I think should let us make the decisions we need to make for our footy club.“Over the last few weeks, we showed a little bit of interest in Jake when it presented to us and for us it was always going to be about getting the deal done at the right price. Over the last few days, it was working towards something and in the end, we got it done tonight at the price that we were happy to get it done with.

“We’ll let the dust settle. It’s been a busy couple of weeks with trades but now we do have this strong draft hand and we know what we’re dealing with in terms of how many picks we want to take to the draft we can get to work and work out what our best options are – whether that be moving up or accepting trades to move into the future or just hitting the draft in what we think is a really exciting part of the draft in that 15-25 range where our picks sit.

“We haven’t settled on a player or a type yet, but it’s just a really, really talented group of players at that area of the draft. “We started talks a while ago with Caleb . He’s a player that was contracted for the two years and the Dogs didn’t want to lose him. They pretty much put their price on him straight away and they weren’t going to deviate on that. We put a really high value on bringing a rebound defender in this year with some maturity and Caleb was the player that we identified to do that. We ended up being prepared to give that valuable pick to get him given our interest in him.

“Rory is an experienced footballer who will provide versatility and depth in multiple roles whilst also providing leadership both on and off field. “All the talk about Carlton didn’t quite end in the way that maybe people thought might happen. There are more contenders than just Collingwood and I think falling into Collingwood alone as the reason why we shouldn’t have done the deal was not any part of our thinking in the end.

“The ten days of the trade period, I’m a big advocate for three, I feel like we’d get a lot more done. “He was pretty keen to come to the club and was probably disappointed. We feel pretty confident in our medical processes and the decisions that were made off the back of that. “I appreciate the interest in Chad given the type of player he is and how important he is to us. I understand the intrigue and interest around him. All I can say is we’re in contact with his management as we are for a lot of players. We’ll do everything we can to keep him and we’re hopeful we can do that.”“We were talking for quite a bit of time right at the last minute, but we got it.
