The council plans to introduce parking fees at six car parks, a move expected to generate more than £330,000 annually for the financially troubled authority. The council has proposed ending free parking at locations in Wetherby , Horsforth , Garforth, Rothwell, and Guiseley, sparking significant backlash during a consultation period that began in December last year.
A council document revealed: "This is not surprising given that people are being asked to pay for something that they have considered to be free." Blue badge holders will not be subject to the new charges, which can be paid via bank card or mobile phone app, although card transactions will incur a 15p surcharge. The report noted: "Cash payments are not proposed due to the problem of theft and vandalism."
One car park, Station Gardens in Wetherby, will offer lower rates, with up to three hours free to accommodate sports teams, after which a daily fee of £2.15 and a weekly pass for £10.15 will apply.
