A free play about Windrush is coming to Preston
Streets Paved With Gold follows the journey of Augustus Cleveland Johnson as he disembarks at Tilbury Docks on a grey November morning in 1948.
The tale continues from the 1950s onwards, exploring the collective experiences of Black British citizens, as well as the themes of hope, identity and change. This year marks 75 years since the ship, the HMT Empire Windrush, docked on the River Thames, bringing one of the first large groups of post-war West Indian immigrants to the UK.The show is written and performed by Victor Richards, an actor, poet, writer and storyteller who was born to Barbadian parents who arrived in the UK in the 1950s.
Throughout his life, Victor has been well-positioned to comment on and observe West Indian culture. He has created and performed numerous plays based on the lived experiences of the Windrush generation. The event is organised as a collaboration between Preston Black History Group, the University of Central Lancashire, Preston City Council and the Harris.Tickets for the performance are free of charge and can be secured via
