Applications open for 750 schools to join the 'early adopters' free breakfast club scheme – giving kids a nutritious breakfast before school
Free breakfast clubs are being rolled out in primary schools in England from next year. And schools can sign up to be one of the first to offer the clubs from today, 27 November. Some 750 schools will be picked to take part in a year-long pilot scheme, starting in April 2025. The clubs mean parents will get at least 30 minutes of free childcare and kids will get a nutritious breakfast to help them learn.
In last month's Budget, Rachel Reeves tripled investment in school breakfast clubs to £33million for 2025-26. This will help pay for equipment and staffing for the early adopters scheme as well as go towards supporting current clubs. And the new clubs will mean no child, regardless of where they live, will have to start school hungry. It also helps families with wraparound childcare.
‘We’re fully committed to breaking the link between background and opportunity – and the first step towards that, we believe, is investing in breakfast clubs in every primary school,’ he told The Mirror.
