Writing for the Daily Record, Aberlour's head of policy Martin Canavan says expanding free school meals is key to eradicating child poverty.
At Aberlour, we work tirelessly to support children and families across Scotland. What drives our team on, are the experiences of the people we work with and the change our services help deliver.
These are some of the points I'll be raising at an important roundtable in the Scottish Parliament this week. Expanding free school meals eligibility is a tangible action that can make a real difference to the lives of tens of thousands of children and their families. This change can happen immediately. It will offer a lifeline to families who are barely keeping their heads above water and who find themselves in school meal debt.
School meal debt is a glaring symptom of a deeper problem – families simply don't have enough to make ends meet. Every child should have the right to healthy, nutritious food and it's the government's responsibility to uphold that right.
