Mr Macron has sent out a strong message.
The new PM was given a month to come up with alternative proposals to replace the Irish Backstop, which he opposes, by German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Wednesday.
However he backed Angela Merkel’s calls for Johnson to come up with a new solution to the Irish Border problem, saying ‘something smart’ could emerge from talks if there was ‘goodwill on both sides’.‘What Angela Merkel said yesterday and which is very much in line with the discussions we have had since the very beginning is that we need visibility in 30 days’ he said.
The EU have repeatedly said the withdrawal deal negotiated by Theresa May, which includes the backstop, cannot be renegotiated. Hard-line Brexiteers oppose the clause because it would involve the UK retaining a very close relationship with the EU for an indefinite period if no solution has been found for the Irish border.
