Cleaning a duvet and pillows can be a daunting task, but there is a free and easy alternative method to freshening them up between washes
Duvets and pillows are arguably the trickiest household items to launder, often putting people off attempting to cram them into the washing machine. Yet, with spring cleaning well under way, now is an ideal time to tackle the job - and there is an alternative approach to freshening up your bedding.
Steven Szary, of My Luxury Sleep Shop, suggests that rather than battling with sodden duvets and pillows, you simply let the sunshine do the hard work, reports the Express. Steven said: "Leave your duvet out for several hours and it's best to do it in the late afternoon or early evening when the sun isn't too harsh. A little bit of sun is good, though, as it helps to kill unwanted bacteria and germs.
" Harnessing sunlight's natural antibacterial properties is a simple yet highly effective means of ridding your quilt and pillows of bacteria and dust mites. A build-up of sweat, body oils and dust can all become trapped within your bedding, making it essential to air it out regularly to guard against the potential growth of mould.
Hanging your duvet outside allows greater airflow and warmth to penetrate the fabric, banishing musty odours and rejuvenating its filling, ultimately improving the quality of your sleep. When it comes to airing your duvet correctly, timing and weather conditions are everything. Before treating your duvet to a natural refresh in the sun, choose a bright, breezy day following a spell of dry weather, Steven advised.
He noted: "If it's cloudy or has rained recently, the air will be more humid and will not be as effective for airing out your bedding.
" Once you've identified the ideal conditions, take your duvet outside during the late afternoon. The gentler sunlight at this time of day will help safeguard the fabric and prevent your duvet and pillows from becoming stiff. Before hanging everything out, give your duvet and pillows a good shake. Once your duvet is firmly in position, gently beat the fabric.
This will help loosen the duvet fibres and prevent the inner filling from bunching together. Where possible, your duvet should be hung on a washing line. If one isn't accessible, however, you can also lay it over a drying rack, fence or any clean surface, as long as it can be adequately secured. As for your pillows, these can be placed on an outdoor airer or on a clean, flat surface.
Simply leave both items out in the sunlight for four to five hours. After this time, your bedding will be thoroughly refreshed and sanitised, leaving you ready to enjoy a considerably more restful night's sleep.
