Protests and demonstrations have been taking place in the Canary Islands with more planned

A hotel boss has said British tourists planning to go to Spain have been calling to see if it’s safe to go - after reports that furious locals have been telling people to ‘go home’. Protests and demonstrations are planned on the Canary Islands as Tenerife and Lanzarote locals grow tired of “overtourism” in the holiday hotspots.

An anti-mass-tourism demonstration was held in Tenerife’s historic town of La Laguna on Thursday, where five members of the protest group Canarias Se Agota have gone on hunger strike to try to persuade authorties to block the building of two new hotels on the island. Mr Marichal said: “It pains me because people confuse the message. We don’t have to be anti-tourist. What we have to do is demand infrastructures in accordance with the tourist model that’s been chosen.” He was speaking out ahead of planned protests on April 20.
