The famous sweet celebrates its 125th anniversary this year
by William Santus, who had a stall at Wigan Market Hall selling fruit and vegetables. He married dressmaker Ellen Seddon and the couple lived in a terraced house on Acton Street, where she made the mint balls in the kitchen.

Mr Santus had been left with no sugar boilers as men joined the war effort.
