Our Derry correspondent Niall Deeney on the unique, local cuisine in the city
Every city and region has its own, unique cuisine shaped by the people that call it home. Derry is no exception.
It's a local delicacy that's essential to a Derry stew. Beef mince. Doherty’s began in 1830 when James Doherty opened his first butcher’s shop in Derry and the local company's meats remain a staple across the wider north west region this day. Order a 'Derry stew' in a local cafe and this is what you'll get. You wouldn't make a stew without it.
You might get a funny look, or you might find someone behind the till feels the need to double-check you're sure you absolutely, definitely want the sausage roll to go inside the bap. Try it at any hot food counter, bakery, or corner shop in the city and they won't bat an eye. They know the drill. The bap is buttered, and the sausage roll goes in.Forget about Greggs.
