Diana Vreeland’s career as one of the greatest fashion editors in history had a predictably surreal beginning. Having newly returned to New York in 1937 from London , Vreeland found herself “going through money like one goes through… a bottle of scotch”, until she was approached byeditor Carmel Snow. Snow had spotted her dancing at the St. Regis in a white lace Chanel dress and bolero with roses in her hair, and offered Vreeland a job as a columnist.

Along the way, she established a reputation as the high priestess of fashion, dispensing more bon mots than Oscar Wilde in between launching the careers of everyone from Lauren Bacall to Mick Jagger, Veruschka to Cher. Until her death in 1989, she remained devoted, above all else, to the art of style – under any circumstances.
