The life and legacy of Labor giant Bill Hayden will be honoured at a state funeral service in his hometown south-west of Brisbane today.
Born in Ipswich in 1933, Bill Hayden served as social security minister and treasurer under Gough Whitlam, where he introduced the single mother's pension and what would later become Medicare.
"His mind was always active, he was always creative, always thinking, always reading, always thinking ahead," Mr Rudd, who first met Mr Hayden when the latter was foreign affairs minister, told ABC Radio Brisbane. Described once as the greatest man to never become prime minister, Mr Hayden resigned as leader of the Labor party amid the rising popularity of newcomer Bob Hawke, who would go on to win the 1983 election.Mr Hayden then served as foreign minister in the Hawke government, later adding the trade portfolio in 1987 before leaving parliament in 1988.He also received Companion of the Order of Australia in 1989.
