As European leaders feel anxious about the next Trump presidency, could he actually be the strongman peacemaker who makes the world a safer place?
Well the unimaginable has happened, even for pollsters and pundits. The only surprise of the last 24 hours was why anyone thought. But American voters are also disturbed by what they see abroad in the world, as if were detached from America’s own actions.presidency has encouraged the illusion that he, the Strongman Peacemaker – might extinguish the fires of war raging in Europe and the Middle East.
Trump’s response to the challenge from the nepotistic Communist businessmen who run China will be the wonder weapon of swingeing tariffs rather than war with a fellow nuclear power effectively allied with Russia. Although China will have a say in this trade war too – as US soy bean farmers found to their cost – Trump hopes that tariff walls might prompt the transfer of entire industries to the US, with the bonus of ending federal income tax for ordinary Americans.
Putin is one of many autocrats – Erdogan, Orban, Modi, Mohammed bin Salman and Egypt’s Sisi are others – who Trump admires and with whom he thinks he can strike meaningful deals. Moreover, Trump’s well-known admiration for Xi Jinping virtually precludes the obvious response to the alleged ‘axis of autocrats, namely to prise these powers apart. Xi will neutralise Trump with his tried and tested methods of flattery and Trump’s keen interest in his own family’s business empire.
This raises the hundred dollar question lurking in everyone’s mind as to whether Trump will be more likely to resolve the world’s conflicts or exacerbate them.
