This article delves into the lesser-known aspects of Pete Price's life before his radio fame, exploring his early experiences, fears, and entrepreneurial ventures.
Pete Price , a renowned figure in Liverpool , has been a prominent figure in the radio industry for over 50 years. Known for his distinctive voice, Price is also recognized for the unusual 'lizard' taunts he received from prank callers during his talk show era. These taunts became so prevalent that they followed him beyond the radio, even reaching the attention of wrestling legend Hulk Hogan, who was photographed with a ' Pete Price is a lizard' sign, causing a stir on the internet.
Before his rise to fame, Pete led a vastly different life. As a young man, he experienced sleepless nights due to the fear of being drafted for National Service, a fate he narrowly escaped when it ended in 1963. In an article for the ECHO, Pete expressed his dislike for 'the uniforms and socks' because of his aversion to wool on his skin. Initially living with his mother, Pete contributed to 'housekeeping, and most of the telephone bill'. He eventually sought his own living space for two primary reasons: the desire for independence and concern for his mother's health, fearing that staying in their shared home after her passing would be emotionally overwhelming due to the memories. Pete soon realized one of the things he missed most, 'apart from being woken up with a smile and a cup of tea', was the shop he lived above. The corner shop in West Kirby, now long gone, was situated next to a chip shop and Frank Biggerstaff's paper shop. Across the road was a bakery, butchers, and a pet shop. After Pete's mother passed away, he continued running the shop for a time before selling it to be transformed into a house. He recalled: 'We lost a wonderful focal point for all the residents in the area to gather and shop. Then people discovered supermarkets, which sold everything under one roof. That was the death knell for the small shops in this country.' Moving forward, Pete had new career aspirations, aiming to become the next Police and Crime Commissioner for Merseyside
