The graduating class of 2024 had an interesting four years of college to say the least.
A pandemic changed their perception of what life, let alone classes, would look like for their first year of college. Since then, the Class of 2024 has stood as a witness to major events impacting the world and their campuses. CLEVELAND, Ohio – They finished high school in 2020 with a pandemic blanketing the world. Instead of prom and walking across a stage, they waved goodbye to their classmates over Zoom or drove past their homes honking in celebration.
She anticipates that many of her college memories will be documented in textbooks, including the pandemic, Black Lives Matter protests, the 2020 presidential election and the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. Most recently, protests on college campuses over the Israeli-Hamas war. Katie Masko, 22, just graduated from Kent State University. She said she felt classmates across the country, despite years of social distancing, are united and closer than other graduating classes.

On the right, she is seen with her graduation cap after four years at Kent State University.Despite her memory of listening to Taylor Swift and sobbing her first night in her dorm, Masko said she and a friend cried their last night together on campus because they didn’t want to leave.
“Our early college years were a reality check,” she said. “We were still teenagers. And at the time, we’re hearing about all of these protests for masks, COVID-19 and Black Lives Matter. And it really did cause us to mature whether we realize it or not.”
