From planes to teapots, how kitsch 'truck art' took over Pakistan and became a global commodity 🚛 The garish carefully painted decoration that has covered Pakistan’s lorries since the 1920s has become sought after across the world

Not only is every inch beautified using acrylic paint, but further enhancement comes courtesy of chamak patti . Artisans painstakingly cut coloured reflective tape into shapes, which are then turned into patterns and affixed. No two vehicles are alike.A closer look, however, reveals that phool patti is about more than simply pimping one’s ride.

“We all want a piece of it at home because Pakistani culture is so ingrained in us,” explains Qurratulain Farrukh. As the co-founder of Urban Truck Art, she has been experimenting with its new and modern face since 2020. “This is especially true about those in the diaspora, who love decorating their homes with Pakistani ornaments. They also love gifting objects that tie closely with our culture.”Customisation, she reveals, is where it’s at.
