The screen icon behind characters including the doomed empress Wanrong and enigmatic Josie Packard reflects on her storied four-decade career and her favorite role she's ever played.Jessica is a staff writer at Entertainment Weekly, where she covers TV, movies, and pop culture. Her work has appeared in Bustle, NYLON, Cosmopolitan, InStyle, and more. She lives in California with her dog.
“I felt it was such a strange and unreliable place to be,” adds Chen. “I never trusted it.” Still, it was a “beautiful” start to her career; and peopleapproach her about the movie, including an army vet once stationed in remote Tibet who watched it during deployment on a makeshift screen made of snow. Yes, snow. “They never got to see films, but it was so popular that they showed it to the soldiers,” she says. “They had no screen. They didn't even have a white sheet.
Chen played Hwei-lan, the widowed mother of Michelle Krusiec’s Wil, who, at 48, discovers she’s pregnant again. When she’s kicked out of her own parents’ home, Hwei-lan moves in with her daughter, who has yet to share with her that she’s queer and in a relationship with a woman. “It was very ahead of its time,” Chen says of the film, which has since acquired cult status despite its initial box office flop.
