Kicking off our pick of the 50 best festive shows, Wallace and Gromit creator Nick Park reveals how things could have been very different for his hapless heroes as their first big adventure in 19 years hits the screen...Nothing in stop-motion animation happens quickly. It can take an animator a week to create just four seconds of film as the tiny Plasticine creatures are moved millimetre by millimetre to create movie magic.
‘There was Feathers McGraw sitting on the shelf in front of me with his beady eyes. And I suddenly realised he was the perfect solution.’ Nick first drew a man with a flat cap and his sidekick who was originally a cat in his sketchbook while studying at the National Film And Television School. When the cat became a dog and Nick managed to get Aardman Animations interested in his idea, movie history was made. The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit was the first stop-motion film to win a Best Animated Feature Oscar – one of Nick’s four Academy Awards.
Nick is now an executive director at Aardman studios in Bristol, where 50 animators work on their own scenes which have first been meticulously drawn, with a support crew of around 250 people. The filming takes about 15 months and Plasticine remains the key component. When the factory that makes the Plasticine used by Aardman was threatened with closure last year, they bought almost its entire stock.
Meanwhile, Nick’s plotting more tales. ‘Wallace and Gromit are always clawing their way out of my sketchbook with new escapades,’ he says.Monday 23 December, 5.25pm, CBBC Quentin and Aunt Fanny, with guest stars including James Wilby, Rita Tushingham and Jemima Rooper, who played George in the 1995 TV adaptation.
Meanwhile, little Teddy is about to be released from hospital after having his adenoids removed. But why does the girl in the next bed not want to go home for Christmas? And as the Swinging Sixties give way to the saucy Seventies, nurse Nancy is embracing new horizons after being relentlessly pursued by sales rep Roger .
