Luke Shipman, a former British Army soldier, overcame the trauma of war and PTSD to find solace and a new path in film and fashion. His story highlights the resilience of the human spirit and the power of pursuing one's passions in the face of adversity.
Luke Shipman, a former social affairs correspondent for BBC East Midlands, has revealed how he overcame the trauma of war to forge a new career in film and fashion. Shipman, who served with the Mercian Regiment in Afghanistan, was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder ( PTSD ) after experiencing terrifying flashbacks and nightmares.
The 37-year-old, from Langley Mill in Derbyshire, said he was haunted by the memory of a Taliban soldier dropping a grenade at a checkpoint he had been guarding just hours earlier. The incident left him with crippling anxiety and fear, often waking up in the middle of the night screaming in terror, fully clothed in his combat gear. His mental health deteriorated further while working as a training instructor for the Army. He described experiencing brutal and aggressive flashbacks, seeing recruits transform into Afghan men and witnessing horrifying scenes in everyday places like Tesco. These episodes led to him being admitted to psychiatric hospitals in Staffordshire and Surrey, where he received treatment for his PTSD. Shipman credits bodybuilding and modelling with helping him on the road to recovery. He entered a competition for tattooed men on his 30th birthday, marking a turning point in his life. He said: 'I decided I wanted to pursue the modelling just before my 30th birthday after I started to overcome my PTSD. I told myself - 'this is going to give me the trigger that I know I'm OK'.' This venture led him to acting, landing a role in the upcoming comedy drama film, Hustle and Cuss, where he portrays a 'gangster's henchman'. He hopes to make acting his full-time career and even plans to attend acting school in the future.
