New Zealand's ice swimming team, The Frozen Ferns, trained in the frigid waters of Castle Ashby Lake in Britain and triumphed at the International Ice Swimming Association World Championship in Italy, winning multiple medals across various age groups.
A New Zealand ice swimming team, known as The Frozen Ferns , has made a splash at the world championships after training in the frigid waters of Castle Ashby Lake in Northamptonshire, Britain. The team secured a haul of medals across various age groups at the competition in Italy, particularly excelling in the 100m freestyle and 100m breaststroke open finals.
Their coach, David Coleman, a former New Zealand ice swimmer, chose Castle Ashby Lake due to its near-freezing winter conditions, providing the team with the perfect environment to acclimate to the challenging temperatures they would face at the championships. Roger Soulsby, the Frozen Ferns team manager, expressed his pride in the team's achievements, stating that their top swimmers are capable of completing 50m laps in under a minute, putting them on par with Olympic swimmers. The team's success story is marked by several standout performances. Emilia Finer captured gold and set a new world record in the 200m individual medley, describing the experience as both a mental and physical test. She acknowledged the immense cold and the difficulty of each swim, but emphasized the importance of training to increase tolerance and endure longer periods in icy water. Another highlight was the mother-daughter duo of Charlotte and Heidi Brynn, who collectively won eight medals. Charlotte secured gold in the 1,000m free and silver in the 500m and 250m free events, while Heidi earned two golds in the 50m and 100m frees, a silver in the 100m backstroke, and two bronze medals in the 250m free and 50m butterfly. Sophie, Charlotte's older sister, also claimed a 100m gold, and teammate Madeline Hobo, 16, secured two golds and a bronze in the under-18 category.
