Families in Nottinghamshire are enjoying a unique ice rink created by frozen floodwater at the Hook Nature Reserve. The shallow ice, formed by a combination of flooding and freezing temperatures, has become a popular spot for children and adults alike.
Children have been flocking to play on a section of frozen flood water which has become an 'added attraction' at a Nottinghamshire park. A combination of flooding and sub-zero temperatures created a large expanse of ice at the Hook Nature Reserve in Lady Bay. The water underneath is shallow, estimated to be a couple of inches, meaning people can safely walk on top - but with a high chance of slipping.
Photos on social media show families making the most of the conditions on Saturday, January 11, after temperatures dropped to as low as -4C overnight. Among those having fun on the ice was 12-year-old Jack Bugg, who even took a pair of skates with him. Charlotte Bugg said her son first borrowed her skates to go on the ice on Friday night and has spent hours there over the weekend. 'He's still out there now,' she told Nottinghamshire Live on Sunday afternoon. 'He's been out there since 8am today, he's really been making the most of it. 'The flooding created so much excess water and the cold helped create a safe bit of an ice rink.' Mrs Bugg said around 14 people were on the ice on Saturday, including kids in sledges. 'It's about 30 metres long and 20 metres wide, like a small ice rink. We've already got a skate park and basketball court so it's about time for an ice rink.' Local councillor Richard Mallender, a Green Party representative on Rushcliffe Borough Council, said the ice had become an 'added attraction' for the park. 'I was quite impressed they were in actual ice skates,' he said. 'It's not very deep, just a couple of inches. People have been skating over it and that's great. It's like an added attraction for the area. 'It's not happened before to my knowledge. We don't tend to get such hard winters here in West Bridgford so make the most of it while you can. Go and give it a go. Be careful but give it a shot, and be careful on the paths getting down there.
