Liverpool face French side Toulouse at Anfield in the Europa League and the two have plenty in common
When Toulouse visit Anfield this evening there will be plenty of obvious links between the French side and Liverpool.
Comolli left Liverpool by mutual consent in April 2012, with FSG seeking a different direction with regards to their transfer strategy at the club. Following his departure from Anfield, Comolli spent time in an advisory capacity in football before a spell at Fenerbache paved the way for his arrival at Toulouse, and the beginning of the second significant link between the two clubs.
RedBird’s interest in Liverpool is indirect through its stake held in FSG, the separation between the two more than enough to satisfy any UEFA scrutiny around a potential conflict of interest. Article Five of UEFA’s regulations reads ‘no-one may simultaneously be involved, either directly or indirectly, in any capacity whatsoever in the management, administration and/or sporting performance of more than one club participating in a UEFA club competition’.
The desire of FSG to implement such focus on data analytics was largely borne from the company’s chief, and Liverpool’s principal owner John W. Henry, and how enamoured he was with how it was adopted and pioneered in baseball at the Oakland Athetics in the early 2000s by Billy Beane. It was a method that would go on to spawn the Hollywood movie ‘Moneyball’, with Beane’s character played by Brad Pitt, and Henry himself portrayed in the movie by Arliss Howard.
