Mohamed Salah is showing no real signs of slowing down - which is leading Liverpool and owners FSG to a serious question in the coming months
If Mohamed Salah has made career out of giving Premier League defenders the runaround on the opening days of new seasons, he's been able to skip away from the assembled media just as impressively.
Back then the frontman was struggling to regain his heights having suffered a couple of hamstring issues dating back to January and his touchline spat with Klopp as he prepared to be introduced from the bench was an unsavoury incident that, while quickly played down, was symptomatic of Liverpool's struggles at that time.
“If I see what he does to keep his body as it is to be ready to play every game, then I think there are many more years inside of him to play," Slot said. "But I’m looking now at Brentford and not the end of the season." Salah might have turned 32 in June but the physical conditioning of an uber-professional and dedicated player like him means there is unlikely to be a dramatic drop-off any time soon. Elite players are performing for longer and there is no evidence to suggest Salah cannot do the same, just as Slot suggests.
The prudent and parsimonious FSG model feels like it would naturally shun the idea of an ageing player being so well paid but Salah, as outlined, remains a special case.
