The UK government is implementing a new system called FuelFinder that will provide drivers with real-time petrol prices through smartphone apps. This initiative aims to increase competition and lower fuel costs for motorists.
The government plans to introduce a system called FuelFinder by the end of 2025 that will allow drivers to find cheaper petrol prices via smartphone apps . This will be made possible by new powers granted by the Data (Use and Access) Bill, which will allow the government to collect live petrol data and share it with third-party app developers. The government hopes this will increase competition between petrol stations and drive down prices for motorists.
Officials expect live petrol prices to appear in navigation apps and in-car devices. This voluntary scheme, currently operated by the Competition and Markets Authority, updates prices daily and covers less than half the market. A similar system in Australia, which allowed drivers to shop around, has proven successful. The new scheme will update smartphone apps with price changes at the pump within 30 minutes. This initiative was originally proposed by the Conservative government as PumpWatch, but the name was changed to FuelFinder by the Labour government. The decision to act came after the Competition and Markets Authority found that fuel price margins had effectively doubled among supermarkets between 2019 and 2023
