State Pension payments are made worldwide, but not everyone living overseas get the annual uprating.
People planning to retire overseas may not be aware that the annual State Pension uprating does not apply to every country. While the State Pension is paid worldwide, you will only get the increase every year if you live in the European Economic Area , Switzerland, or a country that has a social security agreement with the UK.
However, some 453,000 State Pensioners living in countries without a reciprocal agreement with the UK Government, including Canada and Australia, have their State Pension ‘frozen’ at the level it was at when they left the UK. The guidance explains: “The UK has social security agreements with Canada and New Zealand, but you cannot get a yearly increase in your UK State Pension if you live in either of those countries.”
The End Frozen Pensions campaign explained: “They moved, often to be near family, to live in one of the countries without a reciprocal agreement to inflation link their State Pension, so their pension is ‘frozen’ at the level it was at when they left the UK.
