“I really wish there was better news but these new updates make the odds seemingly impossible to overcome,” the organizer, Brian Stieve, posted to GoFundMe. The school’s impending shutdown is the latest setback for Catholic schools in New Jersey, reflecting a state and national trend that has vexed church officials and educators for years. The closing in Wayne comes a year after, but has since stabilized. There were 1.63 million students in Catholic schools during the current school year, the group said in its most recent annual report.
The school had set the 2024-25 tuition rate at $7,750 per student in grades K-4 and $8,000 in grades 5-8 before announcing it would close. Families enrolling a second child would have received a sibling discount of $1,750, with a $2,500 discount for three or more students.
