Fury as Japan executes first foreign prisoner in 10 years just months before hosting 2020 Olympics.
JAPAN has executed its first foreigner in 10 years - a Chinese man convicted of slaughtering a family of four.
Conspiring with two other Chinese men - former students - he strangled Matsumoto, 41, with a tie until he became unconscious, according to court documents. His two accomplices were tried in China, where one was sentenced to death and the other was given life imprisonment, according to Japan's Kyodo News agency.Ahead of a year when Japan will be hosting the Olympic Games, the country has shown that it lags far behind most of its peers.Arnold Fang, the charity's East Asia researcher, said: “Today’s execution is a shameful black mark on Japan’s human rights record and exposes the government’s shocking lack of respect for the right to life.
“We urge the Japanese authorities to establish an immediate official moratorium on all executions and promote an informed debate on the death penalty as first steps towards its abolition.”According to Wei's lawyer, he had been seeking a retrial.Last year, 15 were executed - the highest number for a decade - including 13 former members of the Aum Shinrikyo doomsday cult, who had been convicted of carrying out sarin gas attacks on the Tokyo subway.
