For nearly six months, locals have been demanding restrictions as they say Shingle Bank beach, in Kent's Isle of Sheppey, is being plagued by a 'squatter camp' of campervans.

Residents living near the beach say the number of caravans staying for long periods has increased in recent months. Pauline, 51, who did not want to give her surname, said: 'There are more than there has ever been up there and a lot of them appear to be there for long periods.'Overnight parking is prohibited at Shingle Bank beach - but it's alleged that this is flaunted by campervan ownersFormer islander Phil Drew, who now lives in Sittingbourne, has been visiting the scenic spot for 17 years in his campervan, but says the beach is now being 'abused'.
'Unfortunately, due to popularity over the last few years, the location is getting abused and is also a meeting point for boy racers so I tend to limit my visits, especially in the warmer weather.' The previously-free Ship on Shore car park, about 500 metres away, introduced fees in March in the hope it would stop caravans being 'dumped' there.
