Welcome to Wrexham skirts any potential growing pains in its third season, continuing to deliver great football and great storytelling.
The first is redundancy, and I mean that in the American rather than British sense; how often can you hear the citizens of the Welsh city say something like, “I can’t explain how much it means to have our club back” before it loses all emotional impact?
The second problem feels far more critical, and it’s the creeping awareness that, despite attaching themselves to a down-and-out underdog club in a struggling, almost bleak city holding on to the remnants of its pride, Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds are, in fact, emerging juggernauts in English soccer. Not only did they infuse Wrexham A.F.C.
The show’s creators are masterful at unearthing beautiful stories around the city, and in the three episodes made available to critics, there’s already a great example in Oliver Stephen, a photographer who battles mental health issues with a kind of toughness and grace that can reduce you to tears.
As to the second problem, the fact that Wrexham’s self-appointed plucky underdog status has worn a little thin in the Rob-and-Ryan era, thrives anyway for two reasons. First, at least for a sports fan like me, the business of running a soccer club working its way up the English league ladder is endlessly fascinating, even when a lot of money and PR advantages are baked in.
It may be worth mentioning too that McElhenney and Reynolds remain funny as hell, and the most charming characters that have ever graced a sports franchise’s C-Suite . And though they’re in this to make money, they keep spending it too, and a spirit of adventure underlies the business side of the equation, and exists alongside what feels like a genuine devotion to the community that gave them their stage.
