“You think I’m the voice of Jesus in the world? OK. You think I’m a God? OK. Just know that this gospel singer has done things with his tongue and his mouth that ain’t holy,” says Jacob Lusk 🎙️ shaun_curran speaks with ___gabriels
Gabriels’ first shows weren’t on the toilet circuit, but on national TV. “My first ever gig was on Jools Holland,” Hope says, bewildered by their lockdown performance of the title track to their 2021 debut EPas “probably one of the most seminal records I’ve heard in the last 10 years”.and were nominated for a Brit Award and the BBC Sound Of… poll. “We didn’t win either,” says Lusk as he mock-bangs the table so hard coffee spills out of my cup. “I don’t like to lose.
He seems to have so much confidence in his voice, as evidenced by the ease with which he sang in front of more than 100,000 people at Glastonbury with Elton John, it looks like nothing fazes him. When I suggest that, he starts to laugh manically. “It’s a bit of that,” he says. “But it’s the same amount of nervousness, the same amount of preparation, the same amount of everything – I do it for everything. People at Glastonbury are just as important as the people in the church down the street.
When they met, they were unaware of each other’s pasts: Balouzian and Hope had no idea Lusk had been mentored by rapper Nate Dogg , or was backing singer toaged 25. Lusk has given the impression in past interviews that he didn’t enjoy the experience – he once said it left him feeling like “I wasn’t gay enough, I wasn’t straight enough, I wasn’t man enough, I wasn’t black enough” – but today he is more sanguine.
Still, Lusk says Gabriels “are writing songs about real shit”. When they started writing for the album in earnest, Lusk says, it was in the middle of Covid, which heightened the emotion, giving permission to dig deep within themselves. “It seems like everyone is losing people at a different rate than we did before,” Lusk says. “So I don’t think that’s a space that’s unique to us. But I think maybe we’re the first ones to holistically come at life. Like, all of this happens. People die.
“Jacob is one of the least judgmental people I’ve met,” Balouzian says. “But that’s a part of his life. That’s gonna naturally just come out in the music. It’s not heavy handed.”
