A proposed national park in Galloway, Scotland, has ignited a fierce debate, with residents, farmers, and even some tourism operators expressing strong opposition to the plan.

A proposed plan to designate Galloway in Scotland as a national park has ignited a heated debate, with residents and farmers expressing strong opposition while proponents highlight potential economic benefits. The Scottish Government aims to establish a new national park by 2026, envisioning it as a driver for rural economic growth and a safeguard for Scotland 's natural heritage.

Galloway was selected in July following a successful campaign by the Galloway National Park Association (GNPA), a coalition comprised of conservationists, tourism operators, and landowners. However, the public consultation process, scheduled to conclude next month, has been marred by controversy. Denise Brownlee, a 64-year-old resident of Gatehouse of Fleet, and her neighbor Liz Hitschmann, 74, have spearheaded a 'No Galloway National Park' campaign, alleging the removal of their protest banners by supporters of the national park designation. They have organized protests and public meetings, expressing concerns that the influx of tourists and the establishment of official trails and facilities would detract from Galloway's unspoiled beauty. Brownlee, a former ranger at Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, recounts her experiences dealing with the aftermath of irresponsible camping, fearing a similar situation could unfold in Galloway. The opposition extends beyond local residents. The National Farmers Union Scotland (NFUS) has voiced concerns about potential bureaucratic hurdles and restrictions on agricultural activities within a national park. Stewart Wyllie, an arable and beef farmer in Annan, cites the experiences of farmers in Loch Lomond and Trossachs, where obtaining planning permission for agricultural structures became more challenging. He argues that Galloway, a key food production region, is an unsuitable location for a national park. Even some tourism operators express reservations, fearing an oversaturation of visitors and a shift away from Galloway's tranquil character. Rob Lucas, chairman of the GNPA, acknowledges the growing opposition but remains optimistic, emphasizing the potential for economic growth and job creation through tourism and conservation efforts. He envisions a national park as a means to elevate Galloway's profile and attract more visitors, while simultaneously protecting its natural resources
