With autumn fast approaching, there are several essential tasks to complete in the garden this month - from watering plants correctly to dividing perennials and preparing for spring

As we welcome September and the onset of autumn, it's vital to get our gardens ready for the chillier weather.

"Looking after them encourages them to bloom for longer and keeps your garden looking lush when there's still a touch of summer in the air." She also recommends deadheading plants like dahlias, delphiniums, and roses with "sharp snips" to encourage a "prolonged display." Lucie suggests that gardeners "divide up clumps of perennials in your garden" during September and October to maintain plant health and encourage growth. "Dividing perennial plants is a great way to help plants remain healthy, as it encourages vigorous growth," she explained.

"If the roots are more solid or woodier , use a sharp-edged tool to cut through the roots. Use either a traditional 'half moon' lawn edger, a sharp-edged spade, or a sharp saw," Lucie continued. According to Lucie, it's time to start preparing for early spring. "Depending on which part of the UK you live in and what you are sowing, the weather can affect whether you can sow hardy annuals directly into the ground or start them off in a greenhouse or cold frame," she explains.
