Lists of potential replacements for Erik ten Hag as Manchester United will continue to feature Gareth Southgate so long as the former England coach remains available
Gareth Southgate is reputedly in the running to receive a knighthood in the New Year Honours list for his services to football.
Since then, the Three Lions have reached the European Championship final in consecutive editions, and rumours arose during both tournaments that Southgate would become a 'Sir', regardless of whether England won either. Now that the coach is no longer in charge of the national team after resigning following their defeat this summer, a knighthood will seemingly come his way in the new year.
They added: "Gareth deserves the knighthood, and people in high places want to honour him." A quote from a Cabinet Office spokesman said: "It would be inappropriate to comment on potential honours recipients."
