The attorney general called House Republicans' efforts to hold him in contempt of Congress 'the most recent in a long line of attacks on the Justice Department’s work.'
Attorney General Merrick Garland excoriated House Republicans at the start of a hearing that's expected to get highly contentious on Tuesday, accusing them of blatantly politicizing the Justice Department's work. “Certain members of this Committee and the Oversight Committee are seeking contempt as a means of obtaining — for no legitimate purpose — sensitive law enforcement information that could harm the integrity of future investigations,” Garland said.
But that hasn't appeased Republicans on the Judiciary Committee, which include some of Garland's biggest critics. The House GOP has vowed to take a multi-pronged approach in going after the Justice Department, with several themes that are likely to result in tense interactions at the Tuesday hearing. And those pressure points got renewed focus last week, after the announced conviction of former President Donald Trump.
