What is behind Man United winger Alejandro Garnacho’s recent dip in form at the start of the new season?
Alejandro Garnacho was a shining light in what was a somewhat inconsistent end to last season for Manchester United, but the star has really struggled to replicate his brilliance at the start of the new season.
It came as no surprise that the manager put his trust in the Argentine at the start of this new campaign, with the winger starting both of United’s opening Premier League fixtures. However, he has failed to impress to the same degree as last season, especially in the fixture against Wolves, where Nelson Semedo rendered the winger ineffective over his 68 minutes on the pitch.
Wolves came to Old Trafford happy to sit with 10 players behind the ball, utilising a deep backline and a low block - something that Garnacho struggled to work with. It’s important to note that out of his 34 appearances last season, Garnacho was a substitute in 23 of them. He proved most effective in coming on late into matches, creating and scoring goals as opposition defences tired. Out of his five goals last season, only one came before the 85th minute of a match.
