But Clark, who early in his career paid his dues in clubs in his native Austin -- jamming and woodshedding with folks such as Jimmie Vaughn -- quickly and purposefully shook that easy “new-blues-king” categorization. On his studio recordings, he has mixed in R&B, hip hop, and more recently African and other sounds into his songs, earning four Grammys along the way.
