Gary Davies has opened up about the loss of his friend and colleague Steve Wright, who died suddenly in February at the age of 69
Radio 2's Gary Davies says 'I wish I didn't have to do it' as he takes over from Steve Wright. The DJ and former Top of the Pops host, 66, shared the impact of the devastating loss of his colleague and friend. Steve died suddenly in February at the age of 69 and had been on air just a day before for a pre-recorded Valentine's Day special.
Speaking to the Mirror about how he felt taking on the show, Gary said: "Emotional. I love Pick of the Pops. I've loved Pick of the Pops ever since my my old colleague, Alan Freeman used to do it back in the eighties. It's an iconic programme. Speaking of the loss of Steve and the departure of Ken Bruce from Radio 2 last year, he said: "They're both iconic DJs."
Gary said: "With Steve Wright, without a doubt the end of an era. His presence will be missed for a very, very long time. He was one of a kind, there was no one like him. No one sounded like him. He was a very, very special broadcaster, and he's up there with the likes of Terry Wogan. He is, without doubt, one of the best broadcasters this country has ever produced."
