Gary Lineker was taken off air after refusing to apologise for his tweets about the government’s asylum policy,BBC chiefs had asked the presenter to say sorry for the tweets and he was unwilling to do so. As a result, he will not present Match of the Day this weekend.

Lineker was told to step down from presenting the programme after refusing a final chance to give assurances that he would abide by the BBC’s impartiality rules,The decision was made by Tim Davie, BBC Director-General, after days of discussion with Lineker and his agent Jon Holmes failed to produce an agreement both parties could live with.

There is acceptance within the BBC that Lineker’s “stepping back” from Match of the Day may become permanent.
