Initially the former England footballer had been told by BBC chiefs he would not face action after tweeting earlier this week that the language from Home Secretary Suella Braverman over the government’s new asylum crackdown was “not dissimilar” to that used in 1930s Germany. But on Friday, after ministers and MPs maintained criticism of his comments, Lineker was asked to step back from the Saturday highlights show. It is understood the star is unhappy about the standoff.
