Jambos' Hall of Famer Mackay can see progress under Steven Naismith and is hopeful of a bright future.

Hearts legend Gary Mackay knows better than most how it feels to have silverware dreams shattered by Rangers. And he reckons his old side will be kicking themselves for failing to get at the Ibrox side for a second time at Hampden this season.

“But in the last five or six months our league form has been exceptional. It’s not far behind Rangers and Celtic. It’s a case of going again in the next five games and building towards next season.” Unfortunately for Mackay he’d ended his 17-year association with the club in between the second and third of those finals. Reflecting on Sunday’s semi final defeat, he told Record Sport: “I was disappointed. I thought middle to front there wasn’t enough creativity.

“That first goal was either going to allow Rangers to breathe or it was going to give Hearts the chance to make it squeaky bum time for Rangers. Unfortunately for Hearts they never gave themselves an opportunity to get that foothold. “You have to learn from these negative experiences. Gilles Rousset lost five goals in the first of those three finals then four in the second. But he won the third and was sensational and holds legendary status at Tynecastle because of it. That’s what these guys have to strive for.”
