A Gary man got 20 years Monday for choking his child’s mother in July 2019, slamming her on a bed, then pointing a gun at her.
A jury convicted Shawn L. Perry, 46, on Feb. 28. He was sentenced to 14 years for criminal confinement and a total of six years on two intimidation charges.
His defense lawyer Casey McCloskey said after the hearing he was remorseful. Deputy Prosecutor Jessica Arnold led the case against Perry. The victim was De’shonda Lewis. Perry was later charged in her July 23, 2022 murder. His trial is scheduled for July 15. In the earlier incident, Gary Police responded July 20, 2019 to the 2200 block of Ohio Street after someone called 911 twice to hang up.Lewis’ daughter corroborated her story. She told investigators Perry was arguing, yelling and pushing Lewis. When she went to the back bedroom to help her mother, who Perry slammed on a bed, he pulled a gun on her, too, the daughter said.About three years later, Gary Police responded at 9 p.m.
