The new manager officially took charge today and wants to get Ayr fans excited about their team again.
Gary Naysmith says Ayr's ambition convinced him to swap hero status at Stenny for Somerset Park. United’s new boss finally got behind his desk today – and pledged to give fans a team they could be proud of.
The former Everton and Scotland full back bounced into his new place of work fresh off another promotion party with the Warriors. Now he's ready to turn a new chapter in his bid to bring the good times back for the Honest Men.
“The ambition of the club is obvious and it was always going to take something like this to tempt me away from Stenny. “I loved everything about my time there and they'd made me a very good offer to stay - it’s not like I was in any rush to leave. “But from the moment Ayr came in and I spoke to the chairman here, the potential of what we could achieve really grabbed me.
"When you look at the foundations here...from the new training ground to the stand and all of the plans for the future...it's a really exciting project. "A lot of what's in place is what you'd expect from a Premier League club, so we're ahead of schedule in that respect. The challenge now is to try and deliver those same results on the pitch.
" Naysmith's arrival was only delayed by his ongoing success at Ochilview, where he led them to the second tier on Saturday night. Gary Naysmith and assistant Brown Ferguson are welcomed by chairman David Smith and managing director Graeme Mathie He revealed: "I'm glad I could leave Stenny in the manner that I did and the players were fantastic for me right to the end.
"When it became clear that I was coming here, I was keen for the news to be out there for full transparency. "I have always worked in an up front an honest manner and to finish in the way we did was magnificent. Naysmith swept into Somerset this morning with a full in-tray and admits fans can expect changes on the playing front. He said: "There are inevitably going to be comings and goings in terms of the squad.
I'd like to get two or three in the door quite quickly and then we'll build from there.
"Things will start to look different and while we might not be able to do everything we want in one transfer window, we'll get where we want to go. The hard work begins now.
"The bottom line is I’m hungry to progress this club and ultimately try and get us to the Premier League if I can. “I want to get fans excited about this club again and have a team they can be proud of - hopefully we can get the community right behind us with that goal. "
