The ultimate episode disclosed that Smithy, played by James Corden, did not accept Nessa's proposal from the 2019 Christmas special, portrayed by Ruth Jones, and was instead poised to wed his partner Sonia, brought to life by Laura Aikman. Despite the emotional rollercoaster, viewers were thrilled to see a happy resolution for Nessa and Smithy in the 90-minute finale. Creators Ruth and James endeavoured to reunite the entire ensemble, including Russell Tovey as Budgie and Sheridan Smith as Rudi. Nonetheless, Gwynfor Roberts, who appeared as Dick Powell in two episodes and was frequently referenced throughout the series, was absent from the final script of the Christmas episode.
