The final-ever episode of Gavin and Stacey aired on Christmas Day, with millions of fans tuning in to see whether Nessa and Smithy would finally get their happy ending
The Gavin and Stacey Christmas special has smashed the TV ratings, becoming the most-watched programme on Christmas Day with a whopping 12.5 million viewers excitedly tuning in. It has surpassed the show’s 2019 Christmas special – which had an overnight audience of 11.6 million – by more than half-a-million viewers. The series finale made a comeback after five years, leaving fans overjoyed as they took to social media to express their delight.
Meanwhile, Gavin and Stacey fans got the shock of their lives when the festive episode opened with wedding bells. But it was a curveball; instead of Nessa and Smithy tying the knot, it was Smithy about to say 'I do' to his girlfriend Sonia, played by Laura Aikman. However, Gavin, portrayed by Mathew Horne, brought the wedding to a dramatic halt in a heart-stopping moment during the ceremony, resulting in Smithy and his gang leaving Sonia standing at the altar, reports the Mirror.
"But it did. And I know it's been messy and not perfect. But that's because we're messy and not perfect. But I love you, Nessa. I always have. I mean, not always, but most of the time. And I get it. You don't have to ask me. I'll ask you. Nessa, I love you. Will you marry me?"
