A court sentenced two men, Adam Hastings and Reece Upton, to prison for sexually abusing a 15-year-old boy. The men, who were in a relationship, targeted the victim and groomed him for sexual activity over a two-month period, using gifts and cash to entice him. They fled when one of them was arrested, going off the grid before being found camping in the woods.
Two men, Adam Hastings and Reece Upton, have been sentenced to prison for sexually abusing a 15-year-old boy. The court heard that Hastings, 28, and Upton, 29, who were in a relationship and lived together on a houseboat, targeted the young boy and groomed him for sexual activity over a two-month period. They plied him with cash, vapes, and energy drinks while engaging in sexual acts with him. Hastings also breached a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
When Upton was initially arrested by police, who were alerted to the boy's ordeal after he had been groomed, the pair went on the run. They spent a night in a hotel before disappearing completely, avoiding the use of their bank cards or mobile phones. Thames Valley Police launched a nationwide appeal to find them, utilizing dog and drone units and public assistance. Eventually, the pair were located and arrested in Devizes, Wiltshire, in June 2022, after they had been camping in the woods.During the sentencing hearing at Reading Crown Court, prosecutor William Eaglestone detailed the extent of the grooming and abuse, stating that Hastings and Upton took advantage of the boy's vulnerability. He described how the defendants provided the victim with vapes, cannabis, energy drinks, and cash, and how Hastings on one occasion gave the boy £50 after sexual activity, instructing him not to disclose the incident. The court heard that Hastings engaged in further penetrative sexual activity with the child. Judge Jane Rowley, while sentencing Hastings to nine years in prison with an extended license period of three years and Upton to four years, highlighted the seriousness of the case, stating that the facts were 'quite startling'. She also expressed concern over Hastings' lack of remorse and his attempts to minimize his responsibility for the offences
