The North East stands 10.7 per cent behind London in terms of the number of entries gaining grade 7s and above, Henri Murison says

Henri Murison, chief executive of Northern Powerhouse Partnership said: “We congratulate all young people on their GCSE and vocational qualifications they have received today. “As we see fewer young people reaching grade 4 or above than last year across England we are viewing both how school leavers are doing as well as those who may have moved to college and be re-sitting as they seek to make progress.

“Ofqual do not make available the proportion of young people in exams reaching grade 4 or above by whether they are disadvantaged or not till the autumn, and that is disappointing as the regional differences we see every year are largely a reflection of the differences particularly in the proportions of long-term disadvantaged children by region. 'The government is rightly focused on the challenge of reducing the disadvantage gap which grew during the pandemic.
