New research has found that Gen Z are spending over £1,800 on wedding outfits and accessories – far more than any other generation – as social media pressure pushes costs higher

Generation Z couples are spending upwards of £1,800 on multiple wedding outfits and accessories, new research has revealed. A study of more than 2,000 married individuals has found that Gen Z weddings have evolved into multi-event affairs featuring several wardrobe changes and countless photo opportunities.

The findings showed that Gen Zers are hosting more bridal and groom showers, engagement parties, rehearsal dinners and post-wedding brunches than any generation before them, with social media reshaping expectations and adding pressure. Eight in 10 Gen Zers reported feeling pressured to look perfect on their wedding day, with 38% admitting this largely comes from social media.

Furthermore, one in five said that getting the ideal photographs for social media was among their highest priorities, reports the Daily Star. Ellis Ranson, a celebrity stylist and brand ambassador for footwear retailer Deichmann, which commissioned the research, said: "Wedding content culture is now huge. The typical Gen Z wedding is far more appearance driven than previous generations as they look to change outfits as the day goes on.

"With all of the outfit changes, there comes a price tag that can see people add hundreds onto their budgeted amounts. " The research found 80% purchased two or more outfits for their wedding day, while 71% had at least two pairs of shoes. Despite this, 12% felt they had overspent on their appearance.

Overall, the average spent on wedding attire amongst married Britons stood at £1,219.07 — roughly £600 less than Gen Z. Baby Boomers typically spent £552 and stuck with a single outfit throughout the day, while 70% of Generation X managed with just one pair of shoes. The research found that 82% of women bought shoes especially for their wedding day, compared with 64% of grooms.

Despite this, Gen Z were most likely to retain something to wear again, while Millennials opted to recoup some of their costs by selling their outfits afterwards. Ellis Ranson, for Deichmann, commented: "The pressure to spend on outfits is now huge but you don't need to overspend to chase the perfect look.

"There are so many great alternatives to expensive designer pieces and saving money on your footwear and accessories is a great way to make sure you stay within budget. "
