The former commander was once dubbed 'Macho Jacko' by tabloids for refusing to 'start a Third World War' during the Kosovo conflict
The British Army said in a tribute: “It is with great sadness that we have learnt of the death of General Sir Mike Jackson GCB, CBE, DSO, on October 15 surrounded by his family. He also earned another nickname “Macho Jacko” after he clashed with a US commander during the Kosovo war in 1999. He later earned a degree in Russian studies from Birmingham University while serving in the Intelligence Corps.
In 1999 he took charge of the Kosovo Force – known as K-For – in the operation to end the ethnic cleansing of Albanians in the former Yugoslav republic. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order for his leadership during the war.
